In the heart of Paris, opposite the Louvre Museum, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain is a place for exhibition, creation and encounters between artists and their audiences.

In October 2025, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, or Fondation Cartier for contemporary art, move to the heart of Paris, to the Place du Palais-Royal, opposite the Louvre Museum, into a historic Haussmannian building dating from 1855 that, over time, housed the Grand Hôtel du Louvre (1855–1887), then the Grands Magasins du Louvre department store (1887–1974), and finally the Louvre des Antiquaires (1978–2019).

For the past 30 years, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has been located in the Montparnasse district, at 261 Boulevard Raspail, a stone’s throw from our Hotel Jardin Le Brea, in a glass and steel building designed by architect Jean Nouvel and inaugurated in 1994.

As with its previous location, the Cartier Foundation has once again called upon Jean Nouvel to transform the Louvre des Antiquaires, a building erected in 1885 for the 1889 Universal Exhibition between the rue de Rivoli and the rue Saint-Honoré, increasing the exhibition space from 1200 m² to 6500 m². The site opens to the public on October 25, 2025.

The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain promotes international contemporary artistic creation through exhibitions, performances, concerts, publications, and an art collection.

Multidisciplinary, it intersects visual arts, performing arts, sciences, and literature, and has played a significant role in raising the profile of African artists and South American folk art. Its programming brings together artists, scientists, and writers, and its exhibitions—thematic or monographic—are regularly presented in France and abroad. Its collection comprises more than 1,500 works by 350 artists, which are regularly loaned to museums worldwide.
